I.A Need for Rest
A.The busyness of the Master and the disciples 6.30a
1.Jesus had served publicly for a little over a year and had been very busy.
2.His disciples had just returned from preaching repentance and performing miracles in the name of Jesus Christ.
3.The disciples of John the Baptist heard that John had been beheaded.
B.The busyness of your schedule
1.Americans today are the most accessible and busy as we ever have been.
2.Jobs, schedules, family, church all require time from us.
3.As a result, the mindset that we begin to foster is:
a.There is not enough time in the day.
b.I have to get more done.
c.I don’t have time for my family.
d.I’m under the gun and have to do this.
e.I don’t have time for God or His church.
f.It’s all about me and what I “have” to do.
C.Accountable to Him 6.30b
1.In the busyness of our lives, we must never forget to come before Jesus to tell Him what we have done.
2.This shows that we are subject to His authority.
3.It allows Him to keep our “busyness” in perspective and under control.

II.Come and Rest
A.The call of the Master – “come away and rest for awhile”

Experts estimate that healthy adults have a sleep need of seven to eight hours every night.

Teenagers need at least nine hours every night.

School-aged children up to age 12 need approximately 10-11 hours of sleep.

Preschoolers (3 to 5 years-old) need 11-13 hours of sleep.
Lack of sleep can also lead to serious health consequences and jeopardize your safety and the safety of individuals around you.
For example, short sleep duration is linked with:
* Increased risk of motor vehicle accidents
* Increase in body mass index – a greater likelihood of obesity due to an increased appetite caused by sleep deprivation
* Increased risk of diabetes and heart problems
* Increased risk for psychiatric conditions including depression and substance abuse
* Decreased ability to pay attention, react to signals or remember new information
According to researchers Michael H. Bonnet and Donna L. Arand, “There is strong evidence that sufficient shortening or disturbance of the sleep process compromises mood, performance and alertness and can result in injury or death.

Come and Rest
The call of the master – “come away and rest for awhile”

1.The premise of rest – Leviticus 23.3
Lev 23.3
‘For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation. You shall not do any work; it is a sabbath to the LORD in all your dwellings.’
NASU

Shabbat - TO CEASE
2.The “sabbath” was a “day of worship” as well as a “day of rest and refreshment”
3.The “sabbath” was the covenant sign of God’s lordship over the creation. By observing the “sabbath,” Israel confessed that they were God’s redeemed people, subject to His lordship to obey the whole of His law.
4.They were His stewards to show mercy with kindness and liberality to all Ex 23:12; Lev 25:1.
5.By “resting,” man witnessed his trust in God to give fruit to his labor; he entered into God’s “rest.”

Anapauo - REST (NOUN AND VERB) Mark 6.31
“to take or enjoy rest,”
(from Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright (c)1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers)

B.Christ takes cognizance of the frights of some, and the toils of others, of his disciples, and provides suitable relief for both, rest for those that are tired, and refuge for those that are terrified.
(from Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible: New Modern Edition, Electronic Database. Copyright

1.He can be your “refuge” of rest.
2.He can give your body, spirit, and mind rest for tomorrow; so that, you and I can be overall healthy.

III.A Place of Rest
A.A place to yourself – “Come away by yourselves” 6.31
1.He calls them apart for the reason of spending time alone.
2.Not being with anyone that requires conversation or doing anything good for them.
B.A secluded (desert) place – “They went away in the boat to a secluded place” 6.32
1.Christ takes them by boat to a desert or secluded place.
2.They relied upon nothing externally to give them peace or rest, only Christ.
C.Rest awhile 6.31
1.They went away for the purpose of rejuvenating their body, mind, and spirit.
2.Once they got their “breath”, they were to return to work.
3.There will be no constant rest until we enter our true home in heaven.
